Night Sweats... What A Damper
Never had night sweats? Picture it... there you are, enjoying the sweet goodness and peace of deep REM (rapid eye movement) sleep when all of a sudden you are awakened in a pool of "water"... The questions start racing through your sleepy fuzzy mind: - is the roof leaking?
- was I "sleep-drinking"?
- did I just hit menopause and was that my first hot flash?
- did my water bed spring a leak?
...wait a second... I'm a guy... and I don't own a water bed!!! That's more or less what having an episode of night sweats feels like. They are episodes of nighttime sweating that result in soaking wet night clothes and sometimes it can be bad enough that even your bedding gets soaking wet as well; they can occur without your bedroom necessarily being too hot. The good news is that they usually are not a result of any major (or even minor) medical conditions. In actuality they are quite common and shouldn't cause you to worry too much. Nocturnal hyperhidrosis..., which is just the fancy medical name for sweating at night can be caused by a number of different things but since this website is all about drug side effects, I am only going to touch on the drugs that can cause it and they are listed below. Please note though that this list is not exhaustive and will grow as more information is discovered. If you tend to be the worrying type, or not, then you should let your doctor know about these episodes especially if your sleep is being interrupted because they are occurring fairly regularly and also if you are noticing other symptoms like fever and unintentional weight loss. Something more may be going on in which case it's time to get some medical assistance.
