Metformin Side Effects Glucopahge XR & Glucophage Side Effects
Aside from the Metformin side effects discussed below, there is a Black Box Warning for Glucophage (Metformin) regarding its potential to cause lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a very serious, though rare metabolic complication that can happen when Metformin accumulates in the body during treatment with either Glucophage or Glucophage XR. If and when lactic acidosis occurs, approximately 50% of cases are fatal. This condition is considered to be a medical emergency and must be treated in a hospital setting. Fortunately, clinical trials and overall data to date show that the incidence of this condition is extremely low. Glucophage (Metformin) is used to treat Type 2 Diabetes. Side effects can occur at any time during treatment but usually occur soon after treatment is initiated.
