Luvox Side Effects

In addition to the specific Luvox side effects discussed below, it should be noted that in clinical studies it was found that children, adolescents and young adults (under 24 years old) had an increased risk of suicidal thinking and suicidal behavior. These specific Luvox side effects are not limited to Luvox though - ALL people however, who are being treated with antidepressants need to be monitored very closely for worsening of their clinical condition as well as unusual changes in their behavior and an increased risk of suicide, especially during the first few months of drug treatment.

(Frequently Occur)

The following Luvox side effects are the ones that occurred most frequently during clinical trials:

  • Abnormal ejaculation
  • Accidental injury
  • Agitation
  • Amnesia
  • Anorexia
  • Anorgasmia - inability to achieve an orgasm
  • Anxiety
  • Apathy
  • Asthenia - general weakness/loss of strength and energy
  • Decreased libido
  • Depression
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Dysmenorrhea - painful menstruation
  • Dyspepsia - indigestion
  • Edema - swelling due to excessive fluid retention
  • Flatulence - excessive gas
  • Hyperkinesia - an abnormal or unusual increase in musclular movement/activity
  • Hypokinesia - an abnormal or unusual decrease in muscular movement/activity
  • Hypertension - high blood pressure
  • Hypotension - low blood pressure
  • Increased coughing
  • Increase in liver transaminases - these are enzymes produced by liver
  • Insomnia
  • Manic reaction
  • Malaise - a general feeling of discomfort or not being well
  • Myalgia - muscle pain
  • Myoclonus - rapid, jerky involuntary movements of the arms and legs
  • Nausea
  • Pharyngitis - sore throat
  • Psychotic reaction
  • Rash
  • Sinusitis
  • Somnolence
  • Sweating
  • Syncope - fainting or temporary loss of consciousness
  • Tremor
  • Vomiting
  • Weight gain
  • Yawning

  • Agoraphobia - fear of open spaces or public places
  • Akathisia - restlessness

  • Alopecia - hair loss
  • Amblyopia - lazy eye

  • Apathy - a lack of emotion, motivation, or enthusiasm
  • Arthralgia - joint pain

  • Ataxia - lack of coordination of voluntary muscle movements

  • Bradycardia - slow heart rate

  • Bursitis - inflammation of the bursae

  • Dystonia - abnormal muscle tone that leads to impaired movements

  • Epistaxis - nose bleeds
  • Eructation - belching
  • Euphoria
  • Esophagitis - inflammation of the esophagus
  • Exfoliative dermatitis

  • Furunculosis - a cluster of skin boils
  • Gastritis - inflammation of the lining of the stomach
  • Gastroenteritis - inflammation of the stomach and intestines
  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhage - bleeding in the stomach

  • Gingivitis - inflammation of the gums
  • Glossitis - inflammation of the tongue
  • Hallucinations

  • Hemiplegia - paralysis on one side of the body
  • Hemorrhoids

  • Hypersomnia - excessive sleepiness; inability to stay awake
  • Hypertension
  • Hypertonia - increased tension in the muscles which leads to stiffness
  • Hyperventilation
  • Hypochondriasis - excessive fear or worry about having a serious illness
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hypotonia - decrease in muscle tone which leads to floppy muscles
  • Hysteria
  • Impaired urination
  • Inability to urinate
  • Increased libido
  • Increased salivation
  • Irregular pulse
  • Lack of coordination
  • Lactation (in females only) - secretion/production of breast milk
  • Laryngitis - inflammation of the voice box
  • Leukocytosis - increased white blood cell count
  • Loss of taste
  • Lymphadenopathy - enlarged lymph nodes (swollen glands)
  • Melena - dark stools (due to the presence of blood in the stools)
  • Menopause
  • Menorrhagia - abnormally heavy and/or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Metrorrhagia - abnormal uterine/vaginal bleeding in between menstrual periods
  • Muscle spasms
  • Myasthenia - abnormal muscle weakness
  • Mydriasis - dilation of the pupils
  • Myocardial infarction - heart attack
  • Neck pain
  • Neck rigidity
  • Nervousness
  • Neuralgia - nerve pain
  • Neurosis
  • Nocturia - excessive urination at night
  • Overdose
  • Pain - includes body aches/pains, dental pain, unspecified pain, etc.
  • Painful urination
  • Pallor - pale-looking skin
  • Palpitation - rapid, irregular heart beat
  • Paralysis
  • Paranoid reaction
  • Paresthesia - numbness or tingling/pins and needles sensation
  • Parosmia - distorted/altered sense of smell
  • Phobia
  • Photophobia - sensitivity to light
  • Photosensitivity reaction - sensitivity to light
  • Polyuria - excessive urination
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Psychosis
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Seborrhea - excessive oily secretion from the skin
  • Skin discoloration
  • Sleep disorder
  • Stomatitis - inflammation/ulcers of the mucous membranes of the mouth
  • Stupor
  • Suicide attempt

  • Tenosynovitis - inflammation of the tendon and tendon sheath
  • Thrombocytopenia - low platelet count

Luvox Side Effects
(Rarely Occur)

The following Luvox side effects occurred the least during clinical trials of the medication:

  • Akinesia - inability to move or to control movement
  • Apnea - a temporary pause in or cessation of breathing
  • Arthrosis - a joint disorder
  • AV block - a heart disorder
  • Biliary pain
  • Cerebrovascular accident - a.k.a. stroke
  • Cholecystitis - gallbladder inflammation
  • Cholelithiasis - the presence of/formation of stones (gallstones) in the gallbladder
  • Coma
  • Congestion of upper airway
  • Corneal ulcer
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Cyst
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Embolus - air bubble or blood clot circulating in the blood
  • Fecal incontinence - loss of bowel control; accidental or involuntary passage of stool
  • Fibrillations - abnormal heart rhythms
  • Goiter
  • Hematemesis - vomiting blood
  • Hematospermia (in males only) - presence of blood in the semen
  • Hemoptysis - coughing up blood
  • Hiccups
  • Hyperglycemia - high blood sugar
  • Hyperlipidemia - elevated lipid levels
  • Hypoglycemia - low blood sugar
  • Hypokalemia - low potassium level
  • Increase in lactate dehydrogenase level - lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme produced by the liver
  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Jaundice
  • Kidney calculus - kidney stones
  • Laryngismus - spasming of the laryngeal (voice box) cords
  • Leukopenia - low white blood cell count
  • Mutism - inability or unwillingness to speak
  • Myopathy - muscle weakness
  • Obsessions
  • Obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Oliguria - urinating less than normal
  • Pathological fracture - a type bone breakage
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pericarditis - inflammation of the tissue that surrounds the heart (i.e. the pericardium)
  • Phlebitis - inflammation of a vein
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary infarction - death/destruction of a small part of the lung
  • Purpura - bleeding under the skin which results in a purple discoloration of the skin
  • Reflexes decreased
  • Retinal detachment
  • Slurred speech
  • Sudden death
  • Supraventricular extrasystoles - a type of abnormal heart rhythm
  • Tardive dyskinesia - abnormal involuntary muscle movements
  • Torticollis - involuntary twisting of the neck to one side
  • Trismus - inability to open the mouth due to spasms and inflammation of the jaw muscles
  • Withdrawal syndrome

Post-Marketing Luvox Side Effects

These Luvox side effects were reported after Luvox was approved and being used by the general population. You should note though that they were reported voluntarily by folks in the general population so there is therefore no way to determine how often they occur or if there is even really a true connection between them and Luvox.

  • Acute renal failure
  • Agranulocytosis - a decrease in or complete absence of white blood cells
  • Amenorrhea - no menstrual period
  • Anaphylactic reaction
  • Angioedema
  • Aplastic anemia - a type of blood disorder
  • Bullous eruption
  • Henoch-Schonlein purpura - systemic inflammation of the bood vessels
  • Hepatitis
  • Hyponatremia - low sodium level
  • Ileus - a type of intestinal obstruction
  • Laryngismus - spasming of the laryngeal (voice box) cords
  • Neuropathy - nerve pain
  • Pancreatitis
  • Porphyria - a type of genetic blood disorder
  • Priapism - prolonged, unwanted erection
  • Serotonin syndrome
  • Severe akinesia (inability to move or to control movement) with fever when fluvoxamine was co-administered with antipsychotic medication
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis - blistering and sloughing off of the skin and mucous membranes
  • Vasculitis - inflammation of blood vessels
  • Ventricular tachycardia (including torsades de pointes) - a type of abnormal heart rhythm
