Before delving into HIV treatment, let's start with the basics. - HIV = Human Immunodeficiency Virus
- AIDS = Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
How it is transmitted: - Through the exchange or transference of bodily fluids including blood, semen and vaginal secretions.
- Sharing drug injection needles with people who are infected with the virus; accidental needlestick with a needle that is contaminated with infected blood
- Receiving transfusions of infected blood and/or blood products
- Mothers passing it on to their babies during pregnancy, delivery and/or through their breast milk
How it is NOT transmitted: - Through touching an infected person
- From water fountains
- Sharing a bathroom or toilet seat with an infected person
How it can be prevented: - Only use new, clean needles when injecting... or preferably, just quit sharing needles altogether
- Avoid sexual contact with infected individuals
Ongoing clinical trials are being conducted for reasons including, but not limited to, looking for a vaccine or a cure for this condition.
