Claritin Side Effects

If you've seen any ads for Claritin you'll notice that drowsiness is not one of the Claritin side effects mentioned. That's because ordinarily most antihistamines have had drowsiness as one of their major and most common side effects. Allergies can be very bothersome so being able to take a medication to treat them and still function properly is one of the good things about Claritin. That's not to say however that there are no other side effects of Claritin to be aware of. There are and they are listed below. The side effects of Claritin differ based on the patient population - children experience different side effects than do adults so the side effects below are listed accordingly.

Commonly Occuring Claritin Side Effects in Adults

• Dry mouth
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Sedation

Rarely Occuring Side Effects of Claritin in Adults

• Coughing
• Dizziness
• Dryness in nose
• Increased appetite
• Nausea
• Palpitations

Claritin Side Effects in Children

• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Dyspepsia - indigestion
• Headache
• Hyperkinesia - abnormal increase in muscular movement and activity
• Nausea
• Nervousness
• Sedation
• Vomiting

Post-Marketing Side Effects of Claritin

These side effects were reported after Claritin was approved and being used by the general population. They have been reported in both children and adults. You should note though that they were reported voluntarily by folks in the general population so there is therefore no way to determine how often they occur or if there is even really a true connection between them and Claritin.

• Alopecia - hair loss
• Anaphylaxis
• Abnormal liver function
